Spider-Man 2 (2005) is often remembered as the “Golden Ticket” of the PSP launch. Not only was it a technically impressive showcase of the handheld’s power, but it was also famously included as a free UMD for the first million people who registered their PSPs in North America.

Game Story & Premise

Unlike the console version’s open-world exploration, the PSP version is a linear action-adventure that sticks closer to the narrative beats of the 2004 film while throwing in “deleted scenes” featuring classic comic book villains.

Back Cover Description:

Two years have passed since the mild-mannered Peter Parker first donned his mask. Now he faces his greatest challenge as he struggles to balance college life with his secret identity. But the stakes are raised when the brilliant scientist Otto Octavius is transformed into the multi-tentacled Doctor Octopus.

Swing into action and protect the streets of New York from a rogue’s gallery of villains including Rhino, Mysterio, Puma, and Shocker. Master Spidey’s unique abilities, crawl on any surface, and use your webs to take down the city’s most dangerous criminals in this exclusive handheld adventure!”

Short Review: The Handheld Hero

The Good

  • Graphics: In 2005, seeing the high-fidelity movie suit on a handheld was mind-blowing.

  • Pacing: The bite-sized levels are perfect for the PSP’s “pick up and play” nature.

  • Exclusive Fights: Fighting Puma and Rhino provides a fresh experience even for those who played the console versions.

The Bad

  • No Open World: The biggest “con” is that you cannot swing freely around the city; it is strictly mission-to-mission.

  • Camera Controls: Using the D-pad for the camera while moving with the analog nub is a bit clunky.
