Grand Theft Auto: Sindacco Chronicles is a notable entry in the PSP library, but with a major catch: it is a fan-made total conversion mod, not an official Rockstar Games release. Developed by Barcode Studia and released in 2023 (with a major 2.0 update in late 2024), it uses the GTA: Liberty City Stories engine to tell a completely new story from the perspective of the “other side” of the mafia wars.
The Plot: The Sindacco Rise
While Liberty City Stories followed Toni Cipriani’s rise in the Leone family, Sindacco Chronicles focuses on the Sindacco Family, led by Paulie Sindacco.
-
The Protagonist: You play as Marcus Sindacco, Paulie’s nephew.
-
The Mission: Your goal is to expand the Sindacco empire across Liberty City, sabotaging the Forellis and Leones while managing the family’s legal and illegal businesses.
-
Crossover: The story is cleverly written to intersect with the official LCS timeline. You’ll see familiar events from a different perspective and interact with characters like Joseph Daniel “JD” O’Toole before his eventual betrayal.
Key Features: A “New” GTA on PSP
Despite being a mod, the production value is remarkably high, adding features that feel like an official “Stories” expansion:
-
60 New Missions: A full-length campaign with scripted cutscenes.
-
Business Takeover System: Borrowing mechanics from GTA: Vice City Stories, you can capture and manage 15 different business estates to generate passive income.
-
New Soundtrack: Features 7 hours of authentic-feeling radio content and new DJ dialogue.
-
Voice Acting: Uses a mix of original voice clips and AI-assisted voiceovers to ensure all characters (including returning ones) have full dialogue.
-
Collectibles: Includes 64 Hidden Packages, 20 Snapshots, 15 Rampages, and 15 Unique Stunt Jumps.
Technical Performance & Tips
-
V2.0 Enhancements: The 2.0 update fixed many of the “random crash” issues found in the 2023 release and added new side activities like “Vendetta Contracts.”
-
Cheat Codes: Because it is built on the LCS engine, most standard GTA: Liberty City Stories PSP cheats (like Weapon Set 1 or Health/Armor) work perfectly in this mod.
-
Compatibility: While it runs on real PSP hardware, it is highly recommended to play on the PPSSPP emulator with “60 FPS” patches enabled for the best visual experience.
Short Review: The “Lost” Expansion
The Good
-
Authenticity: It perfectly captures the “mood” of the PSP-era GTA games. The mission design feels like something Rockstar Leeds would have created in 2006.
-
Expanded Gameplay: Adding the Vice City Stories business mechanic to Liberty City adds a layer of depth the original LCS was missing.
-
Polish: For a fan project, the lack of game-breaking bugs and the quality of the new UI/Art is staggering.
The Bad
-
PSP Hardware Limits: On an original PSP, the game can struggle with framerates in busy areas due to the added scripts for the business system.
-
Difficult Peaks: Some of the later missions have a significant difficulty spike compared to the relatively easy official GTA games.
