Open Season (2006) for the PSP is an action-adventure platformer based on the Sony Pictures Animation film. While most movie tie-ins on PSP were scaled-down ports of console versions, Ubisoft built the PSP version from the ground up, making it feel more like a native handheld experience with unique gameplay mechanics.
Gameplay: Boog & Elliot’s Tag-Team
The PSP version differs from the PS2/Xbox versions by focusing heavily on the interaction between Boog (the grizzly bear) and Elliot (the mule deer).
-
Switchable Characters: You frequently swap between Boog and Elliot to solve environmental puzzles.
-
Boog’s Strength: Boog can pick up and throw other animals (rabbits, skunks, squirrels) as projectiles to scare away hunters. He can also pick up Elliot and use him as a melee weapon.
-
Elliot’s Agility: Elliot is used for sneaking past hunters, jumping to high platforms Boog can’t reach, and luring enemies into traps.
-
The Wild Way: By helping forest animals, you earn their trust. Once befriended, they become “companions” you can summon to help you sabotage the hunters’ equipment or clear obstacles.
Key Features & Mini-Games
-
Story Mode: Follows the film’s plot closely across various wilderness locales like Timberline, Beaver Dam, and Shaw’s Shack.
-
Mini-Games: The PSP version is praised for having better mini-games than the console versions. These include:
-
Duck Chorus: A rhythm-based game.
-
Flower for my Deer: A collection-based challenge.
-
Beaver Damage: A construction-themed puzzle.
-
-
Presentation: Because it was built for the hardware, the UI and menus are very clean, and the graphics—while simpler—run smoothly on the PSP’s screen.
Secrets & Cheats
The PSP version has a few fun unlockables and codes. To use these, go to the Main Menu:
-
Unlock Movie Images: Hold L + R and press D-Pad Left (3x), D-Pad Right (3x), then X (2x).
-
Unlock All Mini-games: These are typically unlocked by completing their corresponding story missions (e.g., complete “Meet the Skunks” to unlock “Flowers for my Deer”).
Short Review: A Solid “Little Tikes” Title
The Good
-
Bespoke Design: It doesn’t feel like a rushed port; the levels are specifically designed for the PSP’s controls.
-
Variety: The game keeps things fresh by rotating between platforming, sneaking, and mini-games.
-
Charm: It retains the humor of the movie, and the interactions between Boog and Elliot are genuinely entertaining.
The Bad
-
Wonky Camera: Like many early 3D PSP games, the camera can occasionally get stuck or fail to show the best angle for jumps.
-
Invisible Walls: The forest looks open, but the paths are very linear, and you’ll often run into “invisible walls” if you try to explore too far.
-
Clunky Combat: Using Elliot as a “club” can feel slow and disconnected due to some unpolished animations.
