Mystic Chronicles (2013) is a love letter to the 16-bit JRPG era. Originally released as Fantasy Chronicles on iOS, Natsume gave the game a complete overhaul for its PSP debut, featuring a brand-new translation and an extra storyline. It’s a “comfort food” RPG—traditional, turn-based, and perfect for fans of Dragon Quest or early Final Fantasy.

Game Story & Premise

You play as Lux, a young man who was orphaned as a child and raised in the quiet village of Selka. On his 18th birthday, Lux decides to join the Holos Guild, an organization dedicated to ridding the world of evil.

The Plot: Lux’s simple dream of protecting his home is shattered when a mysterious group known as the Dark Clan attacks his village. During the chaos, Lux discovers he is a “Covenanter”—someone capable of bonding with Guardian Beasts. To find his missing family and stop the emerging threat to the world, Lux must master his new powers and gather allies in a journey that explores his own mysterious lineage.

Back Cover Description

A RETRO ADVENTURE WITH A MODERN TWIST!

“Embark on a journey through a world of magic, mystery, and ancient bonds. Mystic Chronicles brings the classic 16-bit RPG experience to your PSP and PS Vita with stunning sprite work and a deeply engaging story. As Lux, you must answer the call of the Guardian Beasts to protect a world on the brink of ruin.

Master the unique Guardian Beast System, allowing you to assign divine companions to your party to heal, defend, or destroy your enemies. Craft and customize an arsenal of hundreds of weapons using the Workshop System, and test your mettle in the challenging Coliseum. With a completely revamped script and additional story content, the definitive version of this cult classic is now in your hands.

Your destiny is written in the stars. Will you answer the call?

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • Guardian Beast System: Every party member can be assigned a Guardian Beast. While you don’t control them directly, you set their “Tactics” (Attack, Protect, or Restore). They act automatically in battle and level up alongside your characters, even inheriting stats from the equipment you give them.

  • Weapon Upgrading: Instead of constantly buying new swords, you use Training Books to upgrade your existing gear. Items can be leveled up to +5, and at certain points (+3), they “branch” into different weapon types, allowing for a customized armory.

  • Guild & Missions: The game moves away from a traditional overworld. Instead, you navigate via a world map to reach towns and dungeons. The Holos Guild acts as your hub for both story Missions and optional Quests that reward you with gold and crafting materials.

  • Item Collectors: To cut down on grinding, you can hire “helpers” at the Workshop. You send them to previously visited dungeons to harvest materials while you continue your adventure.

Short Review: The 16-Bit Throwback

The Good

  • Beautiful Sprites: The 2D art is vibrant and detailed, outshining many other Kemco mobile ports on the system.

  • The “Auto” Feature: A life-saver for modern players; pressing the Square button lets the AI handle basic grinding battles at high speed.

  • Natsume’s Translation: Unlike the original mobile version, the PSP script is polished, witty, and full of personality.

The Bad

  • Linear Structure: The lack of a true overworld makes the game feel a bit more like a series of menus than a grand, sweeping journey.

  • Classic Tropes: The story hits every JRPG cliché imaginable (the amnesiac hero, the mysterious girl, the evil clan), which may feel unoriginal to genre veterans
