Sweet Fuse: At Your Side (2013) is a standout “Otome” (romance) visual novel that breaks the mold of the genre. Instead of a standard school or historical setting, it’s a high-stakes action-mystery set in a theme park, featuring a protagonist who isn’t afraid to get angry and speak her mind.

Story & Premise

You play as Saki Inafune, the niece of the legendary game developer Keiji Inafune (who appears in the game as himself!).

The Plot: Saki attends the grand opening of her uncle’s new underwater theme park, “Game Park.” However, the festivities are cut short when a mysterious, pig-suited villain named Count Hogstein takes everyone hostage. He forces Saki and seven attractive men into a series of deadly games. To save her uncle and the other hostages, Saki must survive seven days of life-or-death puzzles while potentially falling in love along the way.

Back Cover Description

BLOW YOUR FUSE AND SOLVE THE MYSTERY!

“In a theme park designed for fun, the games have become deadly. Saki Inafune’s uncle has been kidnapped by a madman, and only she can save him. Trapped in a world of explosive puzzles and dangerous attractions, Saki must team up with a group of seven strangers to survive Count Hogstein’s lethal challenges.

Will you be the cool-headed strategist or the fiery hero? Use the unique ‘What the Heck?’ system to call out nonsense when you see it and keep the men in line. With multiple branching paths, deadly ‘Game Over’ endings, and seven different bachelors to woo, your heart and your life are on the line.

Solve the puzzles. Find the truth. Fall in love.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • “What the Heck?!” (The Anger System): Unlike most Otome protagonists who are passive, Saki has a “rage” mechanic. When the male leads are being stubborn or illogical, you can choose to “Blow your fuse.” This often puts the men in their place and is usually the key to progressing the plot or gaining respect.

  • Explosive Insight: During critical puzzles, Saki enters a “thinking mode” where she visualizes the clues. You must select three correct keywords from the dialogue you’ve heard to solve the mystery and avoid a “Game Over.”

  • Branching Romances: Your choices determine which of the seven men you bond with:

    • Subaru Shidou: The cool-headed detective.

    • Kouta Meiri: The bright and protective idol.

    • Towa Wakasa: The timid but kind dancer.

    • Ryuusei Mitarashi: The hot-headed escort (and fan favorite).

    • …and several others, including a secret route!

Short Review: A Breath of Fresh Air

The Good

  • Strong Protagonist: Saki is widely considered one of the best Otome leads because she is proactive, smart, and hilarious when she loses her temper.

  • High Stakes: The “Death Game” atmosphere keeps the pacing fast and prevents the story from dragging.

  • Vibrant Art: The character designs (by Tatsuro Iwamoto, the lead artist for Ace Attorney) are colorful and full of personality.

The Bad

  • Puzzle Difficulty: The “Explosive Insight” segments are relatively easy and can feel a bit repetitive if you are a veteran of puzzle games.

  • Tone Shifts: The game bounces between “deadly serious kidnapping” and “wacky theme park fun” quite abruptly, which can be jarring for some players.
