God Eater (2010) is Bandai Namco’s high-speed, anime-infused answer to Monster Hunter. While often compared to its Capcom rival, God Eater carved out its own identity with a much heavier focus on a dark, cinematic narrative and “over-the-top” weapon mechanics.

The 1st Unit (The Cast)

  • The Protagonist: A “New-Type” recruit who can switch weapon forms.

  • Lindow Amamiya: The cool, cigarette-smoking leader of the 1st Unit.

  • Alisa Ilinichina Amiella: A high-strung New-Type from the Russian branch with a traumatic past.

  • Soma Schicksal: A silent, brooding veteran who has been fighting since childhood.

  • Kota Fujiki: The upbeat, friendly rookie who joins alongside you.

📝 Game Description

Set in the year 2071, humanity has been driven to the brink of extinction by Aragami—god-like monsters composed of “Oracle Cells” that consume everything in their path. You play as a member of Fenrir, an elite task force equipped with God Arcs to hunt these beasts.

Gameplay Pillars:

  • The Devour System: Your weapon can literally sprout a giant set of jaws to “bite” the monster. This grants you Burst Mode (a temporary stat boost) and “Aragami Bullets” stolen from the enemy.

  • Bullet Customization: One of the deepest systems on the PSP. You can program your own bullets with complex logic—for example, a bullet that fires upward, pauses, and then rains down five laser beams on the enemy’s head.

  • High-Speed Combat: Unlike the deliberate pacing of Monster Hunter, God Eater is frantic. You have air-dashes, double jumps, and can swap between melee and long-range fire in a split second.

  • NPC Interaction: Unlike most hunting games of the era, you almost always hunt with a full squad of AI teammates who have distinct personalities and voice lines that react to your performance.

⭐ Short Review: Style Over Subtlety

The Good

  • The Story: Unlike most games in this genre, the story actually matters. It’s filled with plot twists, character deaths, and high-quality anime cutscenes that keep you motivated.

  • Zero “Down Time”: There is no tracking or paintballing here. You drop into the map, and the monsters are usually visible immediately. It’s all about the fight.

  • Go Shiina’s Soundtrack: The music is legendary, blending orchestral tracks with rock and ethnic vocals that make every boss encounter feel like a series finale.

The Bad

  • Repetitive Maps: You will visit the same urban ruins and snowy wastes hundreds of times. The environmental variety is quite low.

  • The “Claw” (Camera): Like many PSP action games, controlling the camera while moving requires the infamous “claw” finger position or constant tapping of the L-trigger to re-center.

  • Bullet “Cheesing”: The customization is so deep that it’s easy to create “broken” bullets that can kill bosses in seconds, which can trivialize the challenge if you look up guides.
