Tekken 6 (2009) is the second major entry for the PSP, following Dark Resurrection. While it lacks some of the bells and whistles of the PS3 version (most notably the “Scenario Campaign” beat-’em-up mode), it is a technical marvel that manages to fit the entire massive roster and all the fighting mechanics of the console version into a handheld.
The Story: A World at War
Following his victory in the previous tournament, Jin Kazama has taken over the Mishima Zaibatsu and declared war on the world. To stop him, his father Kazuya Mishima—now the head of G Corporation—puts a bounty on Jin’s head. The 6th King of Iron Fist Tournament is announced to draw out all the players in this global conflict.
The Newcomers
-
Lars Alexandersson: A rebel leader of the Tekken Force with a secret connection to the Mishima bloodline.
-
Alisa Bosconovitch: A mysterious, high-tech gynoid with chainsaws in her arms.
-
Bob: A legendary fighter who gained massive weight to maintain his strength without losing speed.
-
Leo: A German spelunker seeking the truth behind their mother’s death.
-
Miguel: A hot-headed Spanish brawler seeking revenge against Jin Kazama.
-
Zafina: A Middle Eastern guardian of an ancient tomb foretelling a great evil (Azazel).
Secrets & Unlocks
In the PSP version, almost all characters are available from the start. The “Unlocks” primarily focus on Customization Items and Stages.
Rage Effects (The Roulette)
When your health is low, your character enters Rage Mode (flashing red), dealing more damage. You can customize the color of this aura by playing Ghost Battle and winning the “Roulette” mini-game.
-
Black Rage: 1x Roulette win
-
White Rage: 2x Roulette wins
-
Yellow/Lightning/Fire/Ice Rage: Continue winning consecutive Roulettes to unlock these elemental effects.
Secret Bonus Stage: NANCY-MI847J
In Arcade Mode, you can fight a secret boss: a giant, multi-armed security robot.
-
Requirement: Reach the final stage of Arcade Mode without using a single “Continue.”
-
Reward: You get a massive amount of “G” (currency) if you manage to defeat it, but the match is optional—you move on to the final boss regardless of if you win or lose.
Key Gameplay Mechanics
-
The Bound System: A new combo mechanic where certain moves “slam” your opponent into the ground, causing them to bounce slightly and allowing you to extend your juggle combo.
-
Rage Mode: As mentioned, when your health drops below a certain threshold (usually 10%), your attacks glow red and deal significantly higher damage, allowing for late-game comebacks.
-
Ghost Battle: Since the PSP version lacks the “Scenario Campaign,” Ghost Battle is the main way to play. You fight against AI that mimics the playstyles of real players to earn ranks like Vindicator, Destroyer, and Tekken God.
Short Review: Performance over Polish
The Good
-
Technical Mastery: Like Dark Resurrection, it maintains a steady 60 FPS. The animations are fluid, and the “Bound” system feels great to pull off.
-
The Roster: Having over 40 characters on a handheld in 2009 was staggering. Every character from the console version is here with their full move list.
-
Loading Times: Despite being a late-generation UMD game, the loading times are surprisingly fast.
The Bad
-
Lack of Modes: It is much “leaner” than Dark Resurrection. There is no Tekken Bowling, no Command Attack, and the Story Mode is just a series of standard fights with text-based intros.
-
No Game Sharing: Unlike the previous game, Tekken 6 requires both players to have their own copy of the UMD for Ad-Hoc multiplayer.
-
Customization Limits: While you can still dress up your characters, the number of items is significantly reduced compared to the PS3/360 versions.
