Ape Escape P (2005/2006) is simply the European and Australian title for the game known as Ape Escape: On the Loose in North America. It is a handheld remake of the 1999 PlayStation original, built to celebrate the launch of the PSP.
The Premise: Monkeying with History
The story begins at a local amusement park zoo, where a rare white-haired monkey named Specter discovers a prototype “Peak Point Helmet” (P-Point Helmet) created by the Professor.
-
The Incident: The helmet drastically increases Specter’s intelligence but also fuels a malicious desire for world domination. He liberates the other monkeys, equips them with similar helmets, and seizes control of the Professor’s Time Machine.
-
The Plan: Specter sends his monkey army to various points in Earth’s history (from the prehistoric era to the Middle Ages) to rewrite time so that “Monkey-kind” replaces “Human-kind” as the dominant species.
-
The Hero: You play as Spike (Kakeru in Japan), a young boy who was accidentally sucked into the time portal along with his friend Jake (who is brainwashed into serving Specter). Stranded across time, Spike must use the Professor’s high-tech inventions to capture every single ape and return the world to normal.
Key Features of the “P” Version
While it follows the same plot as the PS1 original, the PSP version (Ape Escape P) introduced several notable changes:
-
Redone Graphics: Every character model and environment was rebuilt from scratch. The colors are significantly more vibrant, and the textures are much sharper than the 1999 version.
-
The Control Shift: Since the PSP lacks a second analog stick, the iconic “dual-analog” controls were replaced. You now use the Analog Nub to move and the Face Buttons to swing your net or use gadgets.
-
New Monkeys: This version features 204 monkeys to catch, including several new apes not found in the original game.
-
Mini-Game Suite: It includes wireless Ad-hoc multiplayer for its four unlockable mini-games: Ape Ping Pong, Snowboard Racer, Boxing, and Ape Quest.
-
Voice Acting: The European version (Ape Escape P) features a completely different English voice cast compared to the North American version (On the Loose), leading to slightly different personality vibes for Spike and the Professor.
Quick Review: Handheld Heroics
The Good: It remains one of the most creative platformers ever made. Each monkey has a unique name and personality (accessible via the “Monkey Radar”), making the “catch-em-all” gameplay loop feel personal and rewarding.
The Bad: The lack of a second analog stick makes the camera a bit of a nightmare. You have to use the D-Pad to turn the camera, which can be very clunky when you’re trying to chase a fast monkey through a 3D environment.
Fun Fact: If you are playing this in 2026 on a modern console, Ape Escape P was actually added to the PlayStation Plus Premium catalog, featuring “Up-rendering,” a Rewind feature, and Quick Saves, which makes those tricky camera moments much easier to handle!
