Tony Hawk’s Project 8 (2006) on the PSP is a unique “hybrid” title. While the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions used a brand-new engine with an open world, the PSP version (developed by Page 44 Studios) utilized the classic, polished engine from American Wasteland. This makes it play more like the beloved “Pro Skater” and “Underground” games, but with the specific goals and ranking system of Project 8.

Game Story & Premise

Tony Hawk is looking for the eight best amateur skaters in the world to join his new elite team, Project 8.

Back Cover Description:

“The Birdman is looking for the best of the best! Tony Hawk’s Project 8 immerses you in the world of competitive skating like never before. Rise through the ranks from amateur to pro to become one of the elite eight. The competition is fierce, the falls are brutal, and the rewards are legendary. The “Classic Mode” Exclusive

The PSP version is the only one to feature an expanded Classic Mode. While the main campaign has its own goals, you can also play through 8 classic levels from previous Tony Hawk games—including Downhill and The Factory—with the traditional 2-minute timer and “S-K-A-T-E” letters.

Key Gameplay Features

  • Nail the Trick: By clicking the analog stick (or your mapped buttons on PSP), the camera zooms in on your feet. You use the controls to manually flip and rotate the board for massive technical points.

  • Stoken System: Performing big combos in front of pedestrians earns you “Stokens.” You can spend this currency in the shop to buy new gear, decks, and even some hidden skaters.

  • Stat Progression: Unlike the console versions that use “natural progression” (skate to get better), the PSP version returns to the traditional Stat Points system. You earn points by completing goals and then assign them to Speed, Air, Balance, etc.

  • Level Structure: On PSP, the levels are separate rather than one continuous open world. This results in much better performance and faster loading times than the PS2 version.

Short Review: The Old-School King

The Good

  • The Engine: Because it uses the American Wasteland engine, the movement is incredibly snappy and familiar to veteran fans.

  • Content: Having the full career mode plus the exclusive Classic Mode makes this one of the most content-heavy Tony Hawk games on a handheld.

  • Frame Rate: It runs significantly smoother than the PS2 version and lacks the frequent stuttering found on the PS3.

The Bad

  • Analog Control: The PSP’s single nub can make “Nail the Trick” a bit awkward compared to dual-analog consoles.

  • Visuals: While it looks great for a PSP game, the character models are a significant step down from the “Next-Gen” 360 and PS3 versions.
