WipEout Pure (2005) is widely regarded as the “savior” of the franchise. After the polarizing Wipeout Fusion on PS2, Pure returned the series to its roots with high-speed, anti-gravity racing and sleek, minimalist aesthetics. It was a flagship launch title that famously showed off the PSP’s ability to produce near-PS2-quality visuals on a handheld.

The Plot / Premise: The FX300 League

The game is set in the year 2197, exactly 100 years after the events of Wipeout 2097.

  • The League: You are a pilot in the FX300 Anti-Gravity Racing League, a professional sport where teams compete in high-octane races on magnetically shielded tracks.

  • The Setting: Most races take place on Macana Island, an artificial island resort built specifically to host the league after the sport was revived from its previous decline.

  • The Goal: There isn’t a complex narrative; your objective is to climb the ranks of various “Speed Classes” (Vector, Venom, Flash, Rapier, and Phantom) to become the ultimate champion.

Key Features: Back to Basics

  • Pure Gameplay: It removed the “pit lanes” of previous games. To heal your ship’s shield, you now absorb your current weapon pickup, adding a strategic layer: Do I shoot my rival or heal myself?

  • Barrel Rolls: Introduced the ability to perform a mid-air roll during jumps in exchange for a portion of your shield energy, rewarding you with a speed boost upon landing.

  • Teams: Features iconic racing teams like Feisar, Goteki 45, AG Systems, and Piranha, each with unique stats for handling, thrust, and top speed.

  • The Soundscape: Features a legendary electronic soundtrack with artists like Aphex Twin, Royksopp, and Paul van Dyk, cementing the series’ connection to club culture.

The DLC Legacy

WipEout Pure was one of the first handheld games to embrace Downloadable Content (DLC).

  • Packs: Players could download “Gamma,” “Delta,” and “Classic” packs, which added new tracks, ships, and skins.

  • Classic Tracks: These packs brought back fan-favorite tracks from the PS1 era, reimagined with Pure‘s upgraded graphics.

Short Review: The PSP’s Best Showpiece

The Good

  • Visual Masterpiece: Even in 2026, the game’s clean art direction and lighting effects look stunning. It truly pushed the PSP to its limits.

  • Perfect Sense of Speed: As you move into the Phantom class, the game becomes a blur of neon and adrenaline that requires absolute mastery of the air brakes (L and R triggers).

  • Zone Mode: This mode—where your ship constantly accelerates until you explode—debuted in its refined form here and remains a fan-favorite.

The Bad

  • Difficulty Curve: The jump from “Flash” to “Rapier” class is notorious. The AI becomes much more aggressive and the tracks become much harder to navigate at high speed.

  • Load Times: Being a launch UMD title, the initial loading times for races can be quite long, often taking 20–30 seconds.
