Burnout Legends (2005) is often considered the “Greatest Hits” of the Burnout franchise. It took the best tracks and cars from Burnout 1, 2, and 3: Takedown and crammed them into a single UMD. For many, it remains the gold standard for arcade racing on the PSP.
Game Story & Premise
Unlike later entries like Paradise, Legends doesn’t have a formal “plot.” It is focused purely on the Burnout World Tour.
Back Cover Description:
“The ultimate hit-and-run! Burnout Legends takes the series’ trademark speed and destruction to the handheld for the first time. Experience the most explosive moments from the first three Burnout games, redesigned for life on the go.
High-speed racing meets aggressive tactical combat. Use your car as a weapon to take down rivals and trigger massive multi-car pileups. With 9 classic game modes, over 95 cars to unlock, and the legendary Crash Mode, this is the definitive Burnout experience in the palm of your hand. Aggressive driving is no longer an option—it’s a requirement.”
Key Gameplay Modes
-
World Tour: Compete in various events across different car classes (Compact, Muscle, Coupe, Sports, Super).
-
Crash Mode: The fan-favorite mode where you intentionally drive into traffic to cause the most expensive monetary damage possible.
-
Pursuit: Returning from Burnout 2, you play as a police car trying to take down a fleeing criminal before they reach the finish line.
-
Road Rage: Your only goal is to achieve a specific number of “Takedowns” (shunting rivals into walls or traffic) within a time limit.

Short Review: Perfection in Your Pocket
The Good
-
The Takedown Mechanic: Bringing the Burnout 3 engine to PSP was a technical marvel. The “Impact Time” (slow-motion steering after crashing) works perfectly.
-
Sense of Speed: It remains one of the fastest-feeling games on the system.
-
Content: With nearly 100 cars and 175 events, it offers incredible value for a handheld title.
The Bad
-
Loading Times: Without a memory stick install (ISO), the UMD loading times can be quite long.
-
Hardware Strain: On original hardware, the frame rate can occasionally dip when there are too many particle effects during a massive 10-car pileup.
