Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (2010) is widely regarded as one of the best titles on the PSP and a pivotal entry in the Kingdom Hearts lore. Set 10 years before the original game, it serves as a prequel that explains the origins of the series’ main antagonist, Xehanort, and the tragic fate of the Keyblade wielders who came before Sora.

Story & Protagonists

The game is unique because it is split into three separate campaigns, each following a different protagonist. To see the “Final Episode” and the true ending, you must complete all three.

  • Terra: The “power” character. He is a strong, heavy hitter struggling with the darkness within him. His story is a tragic journey of manipulation and lost resolve.

  • Ventus (Ven): The “speed” character. His playstyle is fast and frantic, very similar to Sora’s. His past is mysterious, and he shares a deep, hidden connection with the series’ future.

  • Aqua: The “magic” character. She is the most agile and magically gifted. As the only one of the three to achieve the rank of “Keyblade Master” early on, she often has to clean up the messes left by her friends.

Back Cover Description

BEFORE SORA, THERE WERE THREE.

“Master the secrets of the Keyblade in this epic prequel to the Kingdom Hearts saga. Long before Sora was chosen, three friends—Terra, Ventus, and Aqua—set out on a journey to find a missing Master and protect the worlds from the Unversed.

Experience the story through three unique perspectives, each with their own combat style and exclusive bosses. Master the all-new Command Deck and Shotlock systems, and unleash devastating Command Styles to overwhelm your enemies. With breathtaking graphics that push the PSP to its limit and a heart-rending story that ties the entire series together, the origins of the heart begin here.

The legend is born. The tragedy begins.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • Command Deck: Instead of a simple menu, you build a custom “deck” of attacks, spells, and items. Once used, they have a short cooldown period rather than using MP.

  • Command Styles: If you use certain types of commands (like Fire or Blizzard), your character will automatically shift into a temporary “Style” (like Fireblazer or Diamond Dust), changing their standard combos and finishers.

  • Shotlocks: By holding L + R, you enter a targeting mode. Locking onto multiple enemies allows you to unleash a massive burst of homing projectiles or physical strikes.

  • D-Link (Dimension Link): You can “summon” the power of friends you’ve met (like Stitch, Mickey, or even your other protagonists) to temporarily use their command sets and abilities.

  • Command Board: A fully-featured board game (similar to Monopoly) used to level up your commands and gain new abilities outside of regular combat.

Short Review: A Portable Masterpiece

The Good

  • Combat Depth: The melding system (combining two commands to make a new one) is incredibly addictive and allows for immense customization.

  • Graphics & Music: It is arguably the most beautiful game on the PSP, and the soundtrack by Yoko Shimomura is among her finest work.

  • Emotional Weight: The story is much darker and more somber than other Kingdom Hearts titles, making the stakes feel incredibly high.

The Bad

  • Load Times: Without the “Data Install” feature enabled, the load times between areas and for the “Command Styles” can be quite intrusive.

  • Repetition: Since all three characters visit the same Disney worlds (though in different orders and areas), the third playthrough can feel a bit repetitive.
