The King of Fighters ’94 on the PSP is the game that started it all, famously crossing over characters from Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and other SNK classics. While it doesn’t have a standalone PSP physical release, it is a centerpiece of the Orochi Saga compilation and available as a digital classic.

Story: The King of Fighters Begins

The year is 1994. Invitations signed simply with an “R” are sent to the world’s greatest fighters, inviting them to a new 3-on-3 team tournament.

The Plot: The tournament is organized by the mysterious and wealthy Rugal Bernstein, who has a macabre hobby of turning defeated fighters into stone statues for his collection. You play as one of eight international teams, with the narrative focusing on Kyo Kusanagi (Team Japan) as he seeks to stop Rugal’s ego-driven madness.

Back Cover Description

THE ULTIMATE TEAM BATTLE IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!

“Witness the birth of a legend! For the first time in fighting game history, the stars of SNK’s greatest franchises—Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Ikari Warriors, and Psycho Soldier—collide in one massive tournament.

Choose from 8 powerhouse teams representing countries across the globe. Master the revolutionary 3-on-3 team system, where every fighter counts and every victory brings you closer to the ultimate challenge. Do you have the skill to defeat the ruthless Rugal Bernstein and escape his floating fortress?

24 Fighters. 8 Teams. 1 King.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • 3-on-3 Fixed Teams: Unlike later entries, you cannot “edit” your team in ’94. You must pick a pre-set trio (e.g., Team Italy, Team Mexico).

  • Power Gauge: Hold A+B+C to manually charge your gauge. When full, you enter MAX Mode, increasing your attack power and allowing the use of a Super Special Move.

  • Dodge System: By pressing A+B, your character performs a “sidestep” in place, allowing you to avoid projectiles and attacks with proper timing.

  • Team Help: If your character is dizzy or being held by an opponent, your teammates waiting in the background can jump in to help if you haven’t lost a round yet.

Short Review: A Rugged Classic

The Good

  • Historical Significance: It’s fascinating to see where icons like Kyo Kusanagi and Mai Shiranui first crossed paths.

  • Unique Atmosphere: The game has a “gritty” 90s arcade feel, with stages that feature transitioning time of day and interactive background elements.

  • Smooth Spritework: For its era, the animations were fluid and the character designs were vibrant and detailed.

The Bad

  • Punishing Difficulty: ’94 is notorious for its AI. Enemies will often read your inputs, and the final boss, Rugal, is legendary for his “cheap” high-damage attacks.

  • No Team Edit: Being locked into specific teams feels restrictive compared to the freedom offered in every KOF game that followed.
