Need for Speed: Underground Rivals (2005) was a high-profile launch title for the PSP. While the console versions of Underground were famous for their open-world exploration, Rivals was built from the ground up to be a “pick-up-and-play” experience, focusing on high-speed circuit racing and an obsessive level of car customization.

Game Premise

Unlike other entries in the series, Underground Rivals lacks a cinematic storyline. Instead, it leans into the “Rivalry” aspect of street racing. You start as a nobody with a stock car and must work your way through various “Circuit Leagues” to earn respect and cash. The goal is to dominate the underground scene of a neon-lit, fictional city by defeating specific rivals and customizing your ride to be the ultimate street machine.

They see you coming. Now make them watch you go.

Key Gameplay Features

  • Pocket-Sized Racing: The game uses a menu-based progression system rather than an open world, making it perfect for quick gaming sessions.

  • Exclusive Cars: The game features a few cars that were not in the console versions, such as the Dodge Neon SRT-4 and the Mazda RX-8.

  • The “Street Cross” Mode: A new mode for the series at the time, featuring tight, technical tracks that emphasize handling and braking over raw top speed.

  • Deep Visual Tuning: You can change almost everything: front/rear bumpers, side skirts, spoilers, hoods, roof scoops, neon lights, and even the color of your exhaust nitrous.

  • Nitrous Management: Unlike later games where Nitrous refills over time, in Rivals, you earn “N2O” by performing risky maneuvers like near-misses, drifting, and catching air.

Car List (Select Highlights)

The game features a mix of Japanese imports and American tuners:

  • Japanese: Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34), Mazda RX-7, Toyota Celica GT-S.

  • American: Ford Mustang GT, Pontiac GTO, Chevrolet Corvette C6.

  • European: Volkswagen Golf IV, Lotus Elise.

Short Review: The Launch Day Classic

The Good

  • Visuals: At launch, this was a “show-off” game for the PSP. The car models are highly detailed, and the “motion blur” effect when using Nitrous was stunning for a handheld in 2005.

  • Soundtrack: Features a classic EA Trax lineup including artists like Queens of the Stone Age and The Bravery, perfectly capturing the mid-2000s tuner culture.

  • Wireless Play: The Ad-Hoc multiplayer was very stable, making it a staple for local PSP gaming sessions.

The Bad

  • No Free Roam: If you were expecting the open-city exploration of Underground 2 or Most Wanted, you might be disappointed by the menu-only structure.

  • Loading Times: Being an early UMD title, the loading screens can be quite long, sometimes taking 30–45 seconds before a race starts.
